Sweden: Friskens Foto Glömsle

Located in southern Sweden, Friskens Glömsle is a prime wildlife photography hide during the winter, especially for capturing photos of the White-tailed Eagle.

I’ve visited Friskens Fotogömsle in southern Sweden several times, and it has consistently delivered good opportunities for photographing birds of prey, especially White-tailed Eagles.

The hide is located near Vittskövle in Skåne and is well-equipped for long winter days, with gas heating, solar power, somewhat insulated walls, and a camping toilet. You can either stay overnight nearby or sleep in the hide to avoid an early morning commute.

Photography is done through small lens openings rather than glass, which helps keep image quality high. A typical winter day might bring several White-tailed Eagles into view, along with Red Kites, Common Buzzards, and occasionally a Golden Eagle or other less common species.

The “Old” hide – my favourite

The routine is straightforward—you arrive before sunrise and stay until dusk—so patience is essential. For anyone interested in close-range, high-quality birds of prey photography, especially in winter conditions, I think Friskens Fotogömsle is well worth considering. I recommend using a 400 mm lens or longer (I prefer 600 mm), though I have occasionally captured excellent photos with a 200 mm.
